If you’re not familiar with it, Single’s Day is a massive and famous unofficial holiday in China, celebrated every year on November 11th (11/11). The date was chosen because the four “1s” symbolize single individuals.
It started in the 1990s as a university celebration—a kind of “anti-Valentine’s Day” for people to celebrate their single status.
So, what do people do? In China, it’s a day for singles to treat themselves, buy themselves gifts, and celebrate with friends. It has also famously evolved into the world’s largest online shopping festival! Think Black Friday, but on an even bigger scale, with e-commerce platforms offering huge sales. It’s a major cultural event for shopping and self-care.
