Understanding Demons

Demons (妖), sometimes called Yao or Monsters, are beings that come into existence when an animal, plant, or even an object absorbs spiritual energy over a long time. This process allows them to gain spiritual awareness. Sometimes they can transform into a human or part-human form.

These entities aren’t inherently evil, but they often have unfriendly relationships with humans.

Explanation of “tribulation” in the story

In Chinese web novels, cultivators are “going against the grain” of mortality and therefore, going against the heavens. The universe, or “the Will of Heaven,” responds by sending down these tribulations.

Common forms include Heavenly Lightning, where cultivators endure powerful bolts, and Inner Demon Tribulations, which are mental battles against fears and temptations. Other elemental calamities or unique challenges also occur.

The previous chapter ended with an upcoming tribulation which continues in this chapter.

Some thoughts about translation

One of the more difficult and untranslatable words in Chinese are those that concern measurements. For example, “li.”

You might encounter it when reading old stories, historical texts, or even descriptions of ancient places in China. Over time, the exact length of a li has changed. In different periods of Chinese history, its value varied. Generally, a li is understood to be about 500 meters or roughly a third of a mile. So, if you hear that a city wall was “ten li long,” it means it stretched for about five kilometers.

The li was often defined in terms of smaller units like the “chi” (Chinese foot) and “bu” (pace). However, the length of the chi itself changed over different dynasties. Plus, the number of chi in a bu, and the number of bu in a li, could also be altered.

Under the Qin Dynasty, a li was set at 360 paces (bu). However, the definition of a “bu” changed, making the Qin li around 576 meters. The Han Dynasty standardized the li to about 415.8 meters. During the Tang Dynasty, the li was approximately 323 meters. In the late Qing Dynasty, the number of chi per li was increased, resulting in a li of about 644.6 meters.

Honestly, I really, really like the Master’s personality and character design, or perhaps it’s more accurate to say I really like the aloof type of Master. The novels I read are basically all focused on characters with similar designs, hahahaha – aloof with a touch of awkwardness. An isolated, arrogant, and proper ice beauty who isn’t afraid of the mundane world. Everyone would guess that she’d live her life alone, never falling in love with anyone, her heart devoted solely to the Dao, as if nothing could ever hold her back.

Yet, it’s precisely this kind of person who would let down all her guards beneath her disciple. She’d pretend not to care when her disciple flirts with her, then secretly blush. I feel like the story summary is a bit too long. Like, it would be better if it were shortened like this:

After her rebirth, Sui An inexplicably gained a spatial System. Through it, she discovered she was a cannon fodder supporting character, fated to fall for the male lead and ultimately die because of him.

The female lead, it turned out, was her own Shizun, Tan Yun.

This was the same Shizun who had always protected and doted on her, yet would eventually despise and abandon her for the male lead. Tan Yun would even lock Sui An in a water prison and forget about her. By the time she remembered, Sui An would be a cold corpse.

System: “Host, follow the script customized by the System. Collect ‘Good Fortune Qi,’ and you’ll have a chance to defy fate and change your destiny.”

Sui An gritted her teeth: “Fine. I’m going to stage a comeback.”

And so…

When Tan Yun’s old ailment flared up and she was captured by villains, they demanded: “The secret manual or your Shizun. Choose one.”

Sui An sneered internally. Of course, I’ll choose the manual!

System: “Save the female lead.”

Sui An (pained): “…I choose my Shizun.”

Later, Tan Yun lay motionless, her body covered in frost, with only a faint breath lingering.

Sui An watched coldly. She won’t die anyway.

System: “Please alleviate the female lead’s suffering.”

Sui An could only warm her, full of reluctance.

Finally, Sui An injured the male lead. His powerful family stormed her sect, brimming with killing intent, demanding Tan Yun cripple Sui An’s cultivation. Among her sect-mates, many agreed, eager to save themselves.

Just as Sui An believed her fate had come full circle, Tan Yun unhesitatingly pointed her sword at the aggressors: “How about I cripple all of you first!”

Sui An was stunned by Tan Yun’s actions: “System, what kind of script did you customize for me? Why have the female lead and male lead turned against each other?”

System: “Ever heard of a yuri script?”

Another day, another chapter!

I was looking for something to read and came across Please Bully Me, Miss Villainess! (aka 请欺负我吧，恶役小姐).

Summary:

I, Yvonne, reincarnated into an otome game as the evil noble. Based on all other villainesses ever written, a character like me, hated by every reader, should obviously be focusing on bullying the villainess, leading her into the various romance routes. However, something’s wrong with the female protagonist, Elsa! I-I’ve told you that you’re too close to me. Don’t come any further! Elsa: “Yvonne, Yvonne~ How will you bully me today?”

Maybe I’ll read it when I have time since it seems interesting. Have you read it? Is it good?

And the story continues!  I like that it has been focusing on the MC getting stronger, and she is working hard. As usual, the romantic partner seems to be astoundingly talented. I hope our MC can likewise become strong.

Alchemy has always been my favorite cultivation skill, though, of course, combat skills are a must.

I’m glad the story translation has been going strong.

In other news, my laptop, which is ten years old, was acting erratically while I was editing, and today the built-in keyboard has some dead keys. No worries, I bought a cheap USB keyboard and my editing work will continue as planned.

Pill Alchemy concept

Neidan, or internal alchemy, is a Taoist spiritual and physical discipline aimed at extending life and cultivating an enduring spiritual body. Also known as Jindan (“golden elixir”), the objective of this cultivation is to enhance overall well-being and ultimately re-establish a connection with the fundamental unity of the Tao, thereby achieving Taoist immortality.

The term “neidan” translates to “inner elixir/alchemy,” distinguishing it from waidan (external alchemy).

What sets Neidan apart from other traditional Chinese wellness practices is its distinct focus on transforming internal energies to realize an “elixir” that embodies the original state of existence.

Yuri vs. Baihe

“Yuri” is the term that comes from Japan. It broadly covers all female same-sex romance in manga, anime, and light novels. Its roots trace back to the early 1970s. The word “yuri” itself means “lily” in Japanese, a flower often associated with purity and beauty, and in this context, female-female affection.

On the other side, “Baihe” is the Chinese equivalent. It specifically refers to female same-sex stories originating from China, typically in web novels, manhua (comics), and donghua (animation). “Baihe” also translates to “lily” in Chinese, showing that shared symbolic connection across cultures.
